John NelsonParticipantWhy doesn’t V13 give the option to overwrite V12 or install as a separate program like every other software upgrade in the existence of software upgrading?
Why does 2020, for over two decades, continue to miss the mark on providing a user-friendly product?

Santiago Morales2020 ExpertHello John,
Thank you for your feedback. Every “subversion” release do install on top of the previous one. This is the case for instance between 12.1; 12.2; 12,3; 12.4; 12.5; etc.
Major releases do not however install on top of the previous one. The intent is to allow users to test drive major versions without it affecting their current work on their current version. One can then install V11, V12 and V13 on the same machine.
Thank you,
Santiago

ParticipantYes, that’s why I’m questioning why the option isn’t given to the installer (owner) of the software to make that choice.

Santiago Morales2020 ExpertHello John,
Understood. I am not sure the current 3rd party library supports this operation. We will look into this.
Thank you,
Santiago

ParticipantThanks. My biggest issue with this is the fact that I have to reinstall all the catalogs I use. I don’t just use one or two, I use I’ve 40 non- cloud catalogs. Not to mention all my textures and customized settings. It’s too time consuming with time I don’t have.

Santiago Morales2020 ExpertHello John,
Did you know you that regarding your manufacturer catalog folders, you can copy them from the following location:
C:\ProgramData\2020\Design\12\Cat\Common
Over to :
C:\ProgramData\2020\Design\13\Cat\Common
Thank you,

ParticipantSantiago — Is there a quick way to migrate custom user materials to the new version?
Preferably, v11 > v13 ?
Thank You, Rachel

Mike LangensiepenPilot ProHi Rachel,
This is easy PROVIDING you are familiar with using File Explorer. You must have “View hidden files, folders and drives’ ticked in the View options of file explorer.Open File Explorer and go to your C: drive then into Program Data then 2020 then Design.
You should now see 2 folders labelled ’12’ and ’13’. Open ’12’ and right click on the ‘custom materials’ folder and choose copy.
Now go back up to the Design Folder and open ’13’ then right click in the folder and choose paste.
Close File Explorer, Opeen Design V13 and all your custom materials should be there. I will be writing a little PDF guide for my own staff and will publish a link shortly. It will include how to make hidden files and folders visible. -

ParticipantLangensiepen you’re everywhere!
Thanks so much for this tip. I’m happy to report that it worked from
v11 to v13 as well as v12 to v13. -

John NelsonParticipantCopying my 106 catalogs from V12 to V13 seems to have worked, but unfortunately, it took me an hour and 10 minutes. Having the choice to overwrite needs to be an option in the upcoming major updates.
