Shopping for a computer?

What should you look for when you are shopping for a new computer?

Many 2020 interior design product require a solid computer to handle the power of CAD graphics or rendering. Similar to top end video games, some CAD programs can require an above average computer to operate efficiently. While some computer retailers may not be familiar with specific CAD programs, most will understand you when you inform them you are looking for a middle of the road “gaming PC”. If a computer can run the latest video games it can typically handle CAD programs as well.

It is recommended that when you purchase a new computer that you bring a copy of our system requirements to ensure your specific needs are met. Three important factors are the amount of RAM (memory), the graphics card and the screen resolution.

The RAM (memory) makes the computer change pages faster and will allow the computer to have more programs open at the same time without issues. System memory should meet or exceed our system recommendations.

For your graphics card it is recommended you purchase a computer with a “dedicated graphics card”. A dedicated video card makes active rendering faster and significantly improves the stability of the software.

Screen resolution refers to the clarity of the text and images displayed on your screen. This option can be set in Microsoft Windows. At higher resolutions, such as 1600 x 1200 pixels, items appear sharper, but smaller. At lower resolutions, such as 800 x 600 pixels, fewer items fit on the screen, but they appear larger. This can impact the text or images in your design program (too high and you may strain your eyes, too low and objects may not show correctly). This is also important to consider when creating quality screen captures or renderings.

For the 2017 versions of 2020 Design, 2020 Fusion, it is recommended that you have at least:
  • Operating Systems (64 bit): Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1 (64 bit), Windows 7
  • Processor: Intel Core i7 or AMD equivalent
  • System Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphic Card: A dedicated video card with at least 2GB of memory
  • Hard Drive: A solid state hard drive will improve speed over a standard drive
  • Optical Drive: DVD-ROM. A DVD-ROM is required to install 2020 Design and catalogs when Internet access is not available.
  • Security Device: Free USB port for the 2020 Design license (dongle)

2020 Office (2020 Cap, 2020 Giza, 2020 Worksheet, 2020 Visual Impression)
  • Processor: Intel i7 or equivalent
  • Memory: 8GB or greater of RAM
  • Graphic Card: A dedicated video card with at least 2GB of memory
  • Screen Resolution: 1920 x 1080
  • Hard Drive: A solid state hard drive will improve speed over a standard drive
  • DVD Drive: Required for catalog DVDs. Some new computers may not have a DVD drive, such as thin or light weight laptops. An external DVD drive will work
  • AutoCAD: If you will be using AutoCAD be mindful of their system requirements
