Just ran the test on my 7820X – 1m42s… and that was with other stuff running at the time. It really seems like it’s thread count that matters, to me at least.
This made for a rather interesting chart (attached).
i7 7700k (8 threads @ 4.5GHz) – 173s
i7 7820X (16 threads @ 4.2GHz) – 102s
2x X5650 (24 threads @ 2.66GHz) – 44s
So… the highest clock speed (7700K) came in last – makes sense, it has less over-all compute as it has fewer cores. The processor with the highest compute capability (the 7820X) came in at 1.5x the time of the ancient Xeons with more cores but significantly lower clock speeds.
This is why I’m so interested in the 16c/32t Threadripper! Could this trend line be true and yield a ~20s render?
