AutoCAD 2015 introduced a new selection command call “Lasso”.  Lasso allows you to select objects and components by drawing a free form shape around them.  To engage the Lasso tool, click and hold down the left mouse when drawing your selection window.    Let go to stop the Lasso and confirm your selection.  Drawing the lasso to the left acts as a crossing selection, while drawing to the right will be a window selection.  While drawing your lasso you can also press the Space Bar to cycle between crossing and window.   If you wish to use the traditional selection window, click and release the mouse button to start drawing your window, do not hold it down.

Despite the flexibility the lasso command gives you, it may not be for everyone.  If you find this is causing issues when you are selecting, you can disable the lasso option by typing OPTIONS in your command line.  Go to SELECTION tab and uncheck “allow press and drag for Lasso”.
