    Hello all,

I am trying to create a shaped backsplash similar to the one in the attached image. I’ve been trying to do this with a surface, but I cannot figure out how to create curved lines this way short of  freehanding it. What am I missing? Surely there must be a way to create curved lines on a surface in elevation? If not, does anyone have any tips on how I might create a shaped backsplash like this? Thanks in advance!

    Topic: Printing From Drawing Layout

I am trying to print from Drawing Layout. I’d like all of the tabs to print onto one PDF, however when I try to do so, it prints separately, even when put all of the tabs in the selection area. Another issue I’m having is that they layouts are printing in Portrait, when I have the printer and the page setup both set to Landscape.

    Any tips? Thanks!!

    Hi Anvar,

Sometimes I use a photo editing program (I actually use MS Paint – I know, LOL, -but it works for me), but if you can grab a good screenshot off Google images (search for: texture seamless wood, etc) that works too.

What takes fiddling and time is making it look realistically *random*.  I usually do one when I have a quick, straightforward kitchen that I’m going to bang out in no time and I can afford to spend a little extra time on making a nice floor texture.  Save a HORIZ version and a VERT version and you have it in your texture file for when you want a nice floor for a BIG kitchen – where time is money and you can’t screw around.  Then you have a bunch you can choose from that look good.

If you aren’t too worried about it looking really random, and just want it to flow seamlessly, open your image in the editor of your choice (like Paint!), and copy the image and FLIP IT horizontally, and join the two images – so you have a butterfly-like mirrored image.  Then grab that entire butterfly and copy that, and FLIP IT vertically.  Now you have a 4 square mirror.  The image will now be seamless. Not too random – but seamless. If you want to spend the extra time editing the distinctive bits that make it OBVIOUS that it’s mirrored – you can.  That’s the fiddly bit.

When pulling a texture into a render, I always choose the “larger” option.  They tell you not to, but in my experience it will always be blurry otherwise.

As for getting the correct scale, it’s all about giving the texture the right size when you pull it in.  If your texture image is five planks wide, and you know the floor has 8″ planks, then specify the width of the sample as 40″.  The scale will then show them that size.

    Two tips:

-bringing the texture into your design attaches that texture to your design FOREVER. So if it renders badly – you now have this unneeded hi-res texture dragging you down. Even if you replace it with a different texture – the file size of your design is now bloated.  So if you haven’t used one of your textures in an actual design yet – drop a cube onto a blank design and give the cube your new texture in the correct scale. Then if it’s not looking good for some reason -you can do redo it without bogging down your design.

-also, remember that when you bring your texture image into a 2020 design and give it a scale, you can also give it a TEXTURE.  If it’s glass, you can make it super shiny, if it’s brick, you can make it rough.  How light behaves when it strikes your texture goes a long way to making it look real.

I’ve attached images of what I meant by the “butterfly-flip” thing, as I don’t think I worded that well.

    Thanks for sharing these tips.

Hey guys – thanks for the tips! However, that’s how I’ve been doing this for years (seeing items in the Information section), and I already have my go-to’s for appliances and plumbing (and lights! But I know it will help others to know they can still get alterable lights through the Room_Fur catalog!). My question is actually on the pulls and knobs. Is there a generic catalog that shows those? That’s what I can’t seem to find.

And Kris – THAT IS AWESOME!!! THANK YOU!! 🙂 Though I’m not a fan of how Amerock has their catalog set up, this is absolutely fantastic! This actually negates the need for the generic catalog knobs anyway, so thanks for all the help everyone!

Also – one quick note on the generic catalogs… I actually find using the GE catalogs for appliances works better. First, the ranges actually look like ranges most people are buying, and you don’t have to alter the finishes or sizes like you do with the generic catalogs. Just my own quick tip! 😉

    Hello Erik,

I’m happy to hear you’ve renewed your 2020 Design subscription. From your post, it looks like your not completely convinced to make the move to version 12. We’ve made version 12 available to customers in the last several months and have been receiving high praise from customers on many aspects, specifically performance.

One thing we’ve done differently with version 12 is that you can install it onto your computer while still having version 11 installed and available to you. This means you have the flexibility to evaluate for yourself the performance of version 12 while continuing to design with version 11 if you wish too.

We see you have questions concerning our cloud-based content and performance, my recommendation would be to schedule a one on one call with a support specialist in order for us to work with you and answer any of your questions.

We realize that having our content on the cloud can be an adjustment if you are a seasoned designer with our software, however, the benefits of cloud-based content are massive. For one, it allows designers to continuously work with the most up to date content without having to be concerned with installing updates to manufacturer catalogs.

We currently have over 3000 items accessed from the cloud every day & the number is continuously growing.
Speak with a support specialist on some tips and best practices to use cloud content when your internet access is limited.
